Mountain Community Schools operates under the legal name Henderson County Alliance for Education, Inc., a nonprofit organization incorporated in North Carolina. The organization does business as Mountain Community Schools and is the charter holder and governing entity for The Mountain Community School and Mountain Community Online School.
Both schools operate under a single public charter authorized by the North Carolina State Board of Education. As public charter schools, both are tuition-free, nonsectarian, and open to all eligible North Carolina students.

Mountain Community Schools is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors responsible for organizational oversight, fiscal accountability, and strategic direction. The Board operates in the public interest and is accountable to the State of North Carolina.
Board Meetings
The Board of Directors meets monthly, with the exception of June and December. Meetings are open to the public. Board meeting schedules, agendas, and minutes along with governing documents are published on our public board portal.

CHARTER AUTHORIZATION
Henderson County Alliance for Education, Inc. holds a public charter granted by the North Carolina State Board of Education, originally issued for the 1999–2000 school year. The Mountain Community School operates as the founding charter school. Mountain Community Online School operates as a remote charter academy under the same charter authorization, extended in 2026 to serve students statewide in grades 4–8.
Both programs are subject to ongoing oversight and renewal by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Henderson County Alliance for Education, Inc. is a nonprofit organization operating in accordance with North Carolina General Statutes governing charter schools. Neither school charges tuition or enrollment fees.
